* L-DOPA is the precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and 

epinephrine (adrenaline) collectively known as catecholamines. 

* Herbal extracts containing L-DOPA are available; high-yielding sources include Mucuna pruriens 

(velvet bean). and broad beans.

* Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and 

cultivated. Its English common names include velvet bean, cowage, lacuna bean, Lyon bean, Donkey 

eye, monkey tamarind, and Buffalo beans (the last also refers to Thermopsis rhombifolia). 

* The mature seeds of the plant contain about 3.1–6.1% L-DOPA, with trace amounts of 

5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin), nicotine, DMT-n-oxide, bufotenine,

and beta-carboline.
